This video shows the working principle of the voice coil drives by Physik Instrumente (PI). Magnetic linear drives and voice coil actuators function based on the fact that the force acting on a current carrying conductor in a magnetic field is proportional to the strength of the magnetic field and the current. The electrical energy is converted into mechanical energy and generates a bidirectional force, depending on the direction of the current. As it largely dispenses with the use of few mechanical components, this results in less backlash and friction and thus more precision. It also increases energy efficiency and lowers costs.
