Researchers Reverse Circuitry of Optogenetic Switches

A Harvard University chemical biology lab has re-engineered optogenetic switches, photosensitive proteins called rhodopsins inserted into mammalian cells to control electrical firing, so that the switches run backward, firing off bursts of fluorescent light that reveal newly detailed patterns of electrical activity in neural networks, beating cardiac cells and developing embryos, according to a Dec. 17 presentation at the American Society for Cell Biology Annual Meeting in San Francisco.

Inventor of Powerful STEM Microscope Technology Wins Forbes Honors

Adrian Cheng, a scientist at the Allen Institute for Brain Science, was named today in Forbes’ second annual “30 Under 30” list of tomorrow’s brightest stars. Cheng invented a powerful microscope technology that can image thousands of neurons in the brain simultaneously. The technique allows scientists to watch the working brain at unprecedented scale and resolution, capturing images nearly ten times faster than a video camera.

Wrinkles, dryness, and a translucent and fragile appearance are hallmarks of old skin, caused by the natural aging of skin cells. But while most of us can recognize the signs of lost youth when we peer into the mirror each morning, scientists do not have a standardized way to measure the extent of age damage in skin. Now a group of Taiwanese researchers has used a specialized microscope to peer harmlessly beneath the skin surface to measure natural age-related changes in the sizes of skin cells.
