Researcher Progressing on Optical Biopsy for Breast Cancer

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Most biopsies following mammograms reveal benign abnormalities, not cancer.
But women may not have to endure the medical costs, stress and potential complications that accompany such invasive biopsies forever. A University of Florida biomedical engineering researcher is making progress on an "optical biopsy" that has the potential to determine whether growths are cancerous without ever puncturing the skin.

Team of Astronomer and High School Students Observed EK UMa Using Remotely-Controlled Telescope

This week, Astronomy & Astrophysics publishes a somewhat unusual research article because it is co-authored by German high-school students. Led by astronomer Klaus Beuermann (University of Göttingen, Germany), the team [1] involves a secondary school physics teacher, three students from two high schools in Göttingen [2], and three professional astronomers. The team made use of a remotely-controlled 1.2-meter telescope in Texas [3], funded by the Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach Foundation for the expressed purpose of making such resources available to schools as well as professional astronomers. The students, S. Paik, A.-M. Ploch, and J. Zachmann, and their teacher, J. Diese, observed the light variations of the faint (19th magnitude) cataclysmic variable EK Ursae Majoris (EK UMa) over two months.

Scientists Explain Artificial Leaf at Chemical Sciences and Society Symposium

Scientists are making progress toward development of an "artificial leaf" that mimics a real leaf's chemical magic with photosynthesis — but instead converts sunlight and water into a liquid fuel such as methanol for cars and trucks. That is among the conclusions in a newly-available report from top authorities on solar energy who met at the 1st Annual Chemical Sciences and Society Symposium. The gathering launched a new effort to initiate international cooperation and innovative thinking on the global energy challenge.

Block Engineering Wins $4.38 Million Contract to Develop Handheld Infrared Spectrometer

Block Engineering announced today that it has been awarded a new $4,380,000 government contract to develop a fieldable, handheld infrared spectrometer that utilizes Block's unique laser and microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) technologies. The spectrometer will be used for standoff detection of solid and liquid explosive materials or other substances that could be used for making Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs). Block's technology could also be used for the detection of Chemical Warfare Agents, Non-Traditional Agents and Toxic Industrial Chemicals.

MiaSolé's CIGS Thin Film PV Modules Achieve UL and IEC Certifications

MiaSolé, the emerging leader in the manufacture of CIGS thin film photovoltaic modules received simultaneous certification of its 100 and 107 watt CIGS thin film, solar modules to UL 1703 and IEC 61646 and 61730 standards on October 30, 2009. New Laser Therapy Helps Remove Cataracts Accurately and Efficiently

A new laser therapy that can potentially remove cataracts from people's eyes more efficiently and with greater precision was presented on October 24, 2009 at the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) annual meeting. The technology, currently undergoing clinical trials outside the USA, was developed by LenSar, a start-up company which is in a head-to-head competition with two other players to be the first to commercialize the technology. LenSar plans to start treating patients if the FDA will consider the results of the remaining trials to be both safe and effective.
