United Solar Selects GE Proficy Software to Reduce Manufacturing Cost for Thin-Film PV Laminates

GE Intelligent Platforms, a unit of GE Enterprise Solutions, today announced that United Solar Ovonic (United Solar), a world leader in the manufacturing of flexible solar modules located in Rochester Hills, Michigan, has standardized on GE’s Proficy® software platform to reduce scrap, increase throughput and lower the cost of manufacturing thin-film photovoltaic laminates. The Proficy software, which includes Operations Management, HMI/SCADA and Reporting modules, will allow the company to improve the quality of its product while taking cost out of its operations.

SunRun Receives Additional Commitment from U.S. Bancorp for Residential Solar Installations

Verizon Installs Commercial 100G Ultra-Long-Haul Optical System for Live Traffic

On Monday (Dec. 14) Verizon became the first telecommunications carrier to successfully deploy a commercial 100G (gigabits per second) ultra-long-haul optical system for live traffic. This system was deployed on the company's European optical core network between Paris and Frankfurt. The accomplishment marks the first time for deployment of ultra-long-haul 100G using a single channel on a production network.

Researchers Develop Spectroscope That Can Identify Tiny Amounts of Trace Gases

A spectroscope with unrivalled performance, able to identify tiny amounts of trace gases in real time, has been developed by researchers from CNRS's Molecular Photophysics Institute (Laboratoire de Photophysique moléculaire, LPPM) and the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics (Germany), within the framework of the European Laboratory for Frequency Comb Spectroscopy. Led by Theodor W. Hänsch, Nobel Laureate in Physics (2005) and Nathalie Picqué of LPPM, the international team has designed an instrument based on two femtosecond laser frequency combs. Thanks to the breakthrough in performance it has achieved, this spectrometer could become the new reference in ultrasensitive spectroscopy. This is a major step forward both for fundamental research and for many applied fields, and is explained in detail in the advance online edition of the journal Nature Photonics.
