Prior Scientific Introduces Lumen 1600-LED Illumination System for Advanced Fluorescence Microscopy

Prior Scientific's new Lumen 1600-LED fluorescence illumination system is designed for the most advanced fluorescent techniques, however it has intuitive controls making it easy to use. The LEDs in the Lumen 1600 last at least 25,000 hours, and deliver evenly distributed, high intensity light for optimal excitation of fluorophores.

Random Raman Lasing Emission Holds Promise for High-Speed Wide-Field Microscopy

In modern microscope imaging techniques, lasers are used as light sources because they can deliver fast pulsed and extremely high-intensity radiation to a target, allowing for rapid image acquisition. However, traditional lasers come with a significant disadvantage in that they produce images with blurred speckle patterns — a visual artifact that arises because of a property of traditional lasers called "high spatial coherence." These speckles greatly reduce image quality in wide-field microscopy, a common technique for making broad swath images of the whole side of a cell or some other part of the microscopic world in order to understand its intricate inner workings.

Novel Smartphone-Based Device for Accurate Molecular Diagnosis of Tumors

A device developed by Massachusetts General Hospital investigators may bring rapid, accurate molecular diagnosis of tumors and other diseases to locations lacking the latest medical technology. In their report appearing in PNAS Early Edition, the researchers describe a smartphone-based device that uses the kind of technology used to make holograms to collect detailed microscopic images for digital analysis of the molecular composition of cells and tissues.
