Coherent's PowerMax USB/RS Sensors Are First to Use Microelectronics Miniaturization Techniques

The new PowerMax™ USB/RS sensors from Coherent Inc. (Santa Clara, CA) (Nasdaq: COHR) are the world’s first laser power sensors that utilizes state of the art microelectronics miniaturization techniques and integrates an entire instrument within a USB 2.0 or RS-232 cable connector. Specifically, PowerMax USB/RS sensors have all the signal processing and power measurement electronics normally contained in a LabMax meter, and connects directly to a PC with plug and play functionality. Ideally suited for low and high volume embedded sensor applications, this new family of sensors eliminates the need for a separate meter box, thus delivering a significant savings in cost and space, but with no reduction whatsoever in performance.

Aptina Unveils New Surveillance Image Sensor

Aptina announced today the launch of the MT9M033 surveillance image sensor, the latest addition to its extensive portfolio of surveillance image sensors solutions. Goodrich Chosen to Develop SWIR Imaging Technology of DARPA

Goodrich Corporation (NYSE: GR) has been chosen by the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA) to further develop its short wave infrared (SWIR) imaging technology for enhanced night vision capability. Under DARPA's Photon Counting Array (PCAR) program, Goodrich will develop materials and circuitry to allow its small, lightweight cameras to provide images under darker conditions than previously possible. Work will be performed at Goodrich's ISR Systems business in Princeton, N.J.

Survey Shows Most of Asian Optical Retailers Expect Better or Same Business in 2010

GfK Asia releases its Pan Asia optical retailers and consumers preference survey information in line with the 17th Hong Kong Optical Fair, hosted by Hong Kong Trade Development Council. The five key regions surveyed in October 2009 include China, Hong Kong, Korea, Singapore and Malaysia. The survey shows that 70% of optical retailers indicate business will be better or the same in 2010.

Scientists Observe Reverse Shock Wave of Light in Left-Handed Metamaterial

A team of physicists has directly observed a reverse shock wave of light in a specially tailored structure known as a left-handed metamaterial. Although it was first predicted over forty years ago, this is the first unambiguous experimental demonstration of the effect. The research is reported in Physical Review Letters and highlighted with a Viewpoint in the November 2 issue of Physics.
