X-rays Help Reveal Cherubini’s Damaged Musical Score

At first glance the beautifully bound 1797 Luigi Cherubini opera Médée looks like an impeccably preserved relic of opera's golden age. However, flip to the final pages of the aria "Du trouble affreux qui me dévore" ("The terrible disorder that consumes me") and you see the problem: Thick smudges of carbon completely black out the closing lines.

Northrop Grumman and University of New Mexico Sponsor Adaptive Optics Project

Northrop Grumman recently partnered with the University of New Mexico to sponsor an electrical and computer engineering senior design project. The project, titled Adaptive Optics , had students model and write matrix laboratory code to perform adaptive optics correction, starting with the generation of a distorted wavefront and culminating with a corrected, undistorted image.

Canon Reaches New Lens-Manufacturing Milestone

Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today announced its parent company, Canon Inc., has reached a new lens-manufacturing milestone with the production of its 90-millionth EF-series interchangeable lens for EOS cameras. Canon turned out its 90-millionth lens, an EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM (released in September 2012), on May 23, 2013.
