LEDs from OSRAM Opto Semiconductors have made the leap into the mid range of automobiles now that they are being used for functional lighting on the Audi A4. In the new headlights on the Audi A4 the LEDs are providing high-visibility daytime running light and stylish good looks ¡V a successful combination of innovative headlight design and high levels of safety. This is an important first step toward the widespread use of LED technology in vehicle headlights.

A Light Source with Clear Advantages

OSRAM Opto Semiconductors has developed a transparent white OLED with outstanding performance. The large-scale prototype is transparent either on or off. Under laboratory conditions it has achieved a luminous efficacy of more than 20 lm/W at a brightness of 1000 cd/m². This opens up possible applications such as partitions that are almost invisible by day and then provide a pleasant diffused light at night.

Emcore Receives Purchase Order for Concentrating Photovoltaic Systems

EMCORE Corporation, a leading provider of compound semiconductor-based components and subsystems for the broadband, fiber optic, satellite, and terrestrial solar power markets, announced today that it has received a purchase order to supply 5.7 Megawatts (MW) of EMCORE's Concentrating Photovoltaic (CPV) systems for alternative energy projects in South Korea, along with a letter of intent for follow-on projects of 14.3 MW, expected to be released within the next 6 months.

Researcher Manufactures Stacked Split-Ring Metamaterial for the Optical Wavelength Range

Last year researchers from Duke University stunned the world when they announced a cloaking device for the microwave range. This device made use of metamaterials that had a negative refractive index for electromagnetic radiation. The metamaterials were carefully designed split-ring resonators with a structure size much smaller than the wavelength. Only 10 stacked layers of metamaterials were necessary to achieve the desired invisibility effect.

JDSU Next-Generation OTDRs Offers More Effective Troubleshooting of Fiber Networks

JDSU today announced three field-interchangeable, single-slot plug-in OTDRs for the T-BERD/MTS-6000 and T-BERD/MTS-8000 platforms. Each of the new OTDR modules -- for very short-range (VSRe), medium-range (MR) and long-range (LR) environments -- provide the right combination of price and performance for the respective type of network under test. The VSRe module is geared to FTTx/access networks, the MR to metro/regional networks and the LR to core networks.

This is reported by the Berlin researchers Peter Gaal, Wilhelm Kuehn, Klaus Reimann, Michael Woerner, and Thomas Elsaesser of the Max-Born Institute and Rudolf Hey of the Paul Drude Institute in the latest issue of the magazine Nature (Vol. 450, Page 1210).

Lockheed Martin Delivers Atmospheric Imaging Assembly to NASA

The Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA), a suite of four telescopes for NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), has been delivered to the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) in preparation for a launch of SDO no earlier than December 2008. The AIA was designed and built at the Solar and Astrophysics Laboratory of the Lockheed Martin Advanced Technology Center (ATC) in Palo Alto.

Lack of Light Causes Depression

People troubled by depression usually experience their dark moods in an on-again, off-again fashion. In that respect, seasonal affective disorder (SAD) differs only in that the oscillations follow a seasonal schedule, with the depression usually starting in the fall and lasting through the spring. Lack of light is often blamed for SAD, but just how darker days cause depression in SAD sufferers is still in question, reports the January 2008 issue of the Harvard Health Letter.
