SERIS and Trina Solar Sign Solar Cell Development Deal

Trina Solar and Solar Energy Research Institute of Singapore (SERIS) have signed a research deal to develop advanced and high-efficient solar cells. Under the agreement, SERIS will provide research and development (R&D) services to design unique mono-crystalline silicon solar cells. The company will print the contacts on the back side of the solar cell to maximize its sun exposure. Trina’s mono-crystalline wafers will be utilized to design the solar cells.

Trina Solar estimates to achieve about 23.5% laboratory test efficiency and 21.5% manufacturing efficiency. The project will begin on June 2010 and will get completed by 2013. The company will cover the research expenditure in return for the intellectual property rights.

Trina Solar's Vice President of Technology, Dr. Huang Qiang, informed that the company is happy to partner with SERIS to develop this advanced cell process technology. He added that combining the company’s manufacturing expertise with SERIS’s solar energy research will enhance the efficiency of their crystalline solar cells. The solar cells will be incorporated in their manufacturing lines by the year 2013, he informed.

According to SERIS’ Cluster Director, Professor Armin Aberle, the company welcomes the opportunity to work on the development stage of sophisticated solar cell technology.
