MKS Announces Newport™ Advanced Benchtop Optical Power Meters for Fast, Accurate, and Fully Calibrated Measurements in Datacom, R&D, and Industrial Production

MKS Inc., a global provider of enabling technologies that transform our world, has announced the Newport 1940-R and 2940-R Advanced Benchtop Optical Power Meters. These high-precision benchtop instruments are designed for fast, accurate, and fully calibrated optical power measurements in R&D labs and high-volume production environments. When combined with the wide range of Newport photodiode, thermopile, and integrated spheres sensors, they support measurements across all laser types and light sources. The Newport 1940-R meter works with one sensor, while the 2940-R meter can read two sensors simultaneously for comparison or ratio measurements. Ideal for applications such as datacom fiber alignment, scientific research, R&D labs, and industrial production, both meters feature high-bandwidth electronics, advanced filtering options, and a low-noise design that ensure stable and repeatable results for CW, modulated, pulsed, and high-speed sources.

The Newport 1940-R meter and 2940-R meter include a large, high-brightness, 7-inch touchscreen with knob and buttons that provides an intuitive graphical interface with clear numeric and graphical readings, real-time graphing, multiple display modes, trend plots and statistics, and quick access to measurement settings. Graphical layouts can be customized based on specific test needs. These features make operation of the meters simple and reduce setup time.

"Users in lab and production environments often face recurring measurement difficulties with older systems, including limited bandwidth, higher noise, and outdated electronics," said Reuven Silverman, General Manager, Newport Instruments Products. "Frequent adjustments to the instruments were required to maintain accuracy. The Newport 1940-R and 2940-R optical power meters provide a modern platform with faster response, lower noise, intuitive operation, and full sensor compatibility. These systems have removed such pain points as alignment sensitivity, slow data capture, integration challenges, and inconsistent long-term stability. With the new optical power meters, users now have a reliable and easy-to-use measurement solution."

Both meters offer USB-C, Ethernet, and RS-232 connections - enabling data logging, remote control, and seamless integration with Newport software, automated test systems, R&D benches, and production environments.

The Newport 1940-R and 2940-R optical power meters are factory-calibrated and engineered for long-term stability, ensuring reliable performance across a wide range of ambient temperatures and input power levels. NIST-traceable calibration with ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation ensures audit-ready accuracy.

The ergonomic benchtop design allows efficient use of space while maintaining the accuracy, traceability, and ease-of-use required for modern photonics applications.
