Single Chip IC Solution Enhances Performance of Sensors

Avago Technologies today announced a new miniature single-chip signal conditioning IC that enhances the performance and robustness of optical sensors used for proximity or object detection in consumer and industrial applications. When used with optical proximity sensors, Avago's APDS-9700 signal conditioning IC provides accurate and robust detection of objects in ambient light and sunlight conditions, and will allow design engineers to package more functionality into those applications where printed circuit board space is limited. As a result, this signal conditioning IC will provide designers with a total solution that offers ease of implementation and cost savings. Avago is a leading supplier of analog interface components for communications, industrial and consumer applications.

Avago's APDS-9700 signal conditioning IC is packaged in an eight-pin QFN package measuring 0.55mm (H) by 2 mm (W) by 2 mm (L) to provide designers with a space-saving solution that is ideal for designs that require miniature proximity or object detection sensors. The APDS-9700 combines the functionality of signal conditioning for proximity sensing into a single chip to reduce the number of components required and helps shorten design time to market. This new signal conditioning IC targets designers of devices such as PDAs, mobile phones, handheld games, and laptop computers. Other targeted applications include industrial applications such as vending machines, industrial automation equipment, contactless switches and sanitary automation devices.

Manufacturers using infrared proximity sensors are required to design and implement their own signal conditioning using a discrete solution. The challenge that they face in today's marketplace is to fit the design in extremely tight spaces where space is limited. Avago's APDS-9700 is an ideal solution to help designers overcome these space, cost and design-in challenges.

The APDS-9700 IC includes a LED driver circuit, artificial light immunity, sunlight cancellation and a built-in LED stuck high protection circuit to enable operation in artificial or sunlight conditions. Moreover, the APDS-9700 can be paired with either an integrated proximity sensor or discrete pair solution to provide design flexibility.
