New Telescopic Contact Lens Holds Promise for Better, Stronger Vision

An estimated 285 million people are visually impaired worldwide. Age-related macular degeneration alone is the leading cause of blindness among older adults in the Western world. But this week at the AAAS Annual Meeting in San Jose, California, Eric Tremblay from EPFL in Switzerland unveils a new prototype of his telescopic contact lens--the first of its kind--giving hope for better, stronger vision. The optics specialist also debuts complementary smart glasses that recognize winks and ignore blinks, allowing wearers of the contact lenses to switch between normal and magnified vision.

Earth Polychromatic Imaging Camera Launched Aboard the Deep Space Climate Observatory Spacecraft

A new Lockheed Martin instrument is about to make a world of difference for climate scientists. Launched successfully today aboard the Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR) spacecraft, the Earth Polychromatic Imaging Camera (EPIC) will provide imaging of the entire sunlit side of Earth in one view, something that hasn't been done before from a satellite.

New McPherson Vacuum Ultraviolet Universal Spectrophotometer Offers Improved Optical Characterization

Deep Ultraviolet Luminescence Spectrophotometer
Short ultraviolet wavelengths improve optical characterization and expand spectral measurements from the vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) to the near infrared. The new McPherson vacuum ultraviolet universal spectrophotometer is an optical test system optimized for emitting samples like phosphors or photo- and electro- luminescent crystals. These are used in modern efficient lighting, displays, and lasers. It can measure reflectance, transmission and fluorescence emission over its complete working, 120 nanometers to 2.2 microns.
