OSRAM’s LED Research Team Wins German Future Prize 2007

For outstanding research work on innovative lighting technologies Dr. Klaus Streubel and Dr. Stefan Illek from OSRAM Opto Semiconductors, together with Dr. Andreas Bräuer from the Fraunhofer Institute for Optics and Precision Engineering in Jena, were awarded this year’s prize for technology and innovation from the President of Germany. The German Future Prize for 2007 was awarded specifically for thin-film chip technology and its application in the Ostar family of LEDs.

Revolutionary Technique Opens a New World of Fluorescence Microscopy

Carl Zeiss and physicists Dr. Eric Betzig and Dr. Harald Hess have signed an exclusive license agreement for commercialization of Photo- activated Localization (PAL) microscopy. This new technique opens a new world of fluorescence microscopy, demonstrating for the first time in cells a resolution of approximately 20 nm. This is an order of magnitude higher than conventional fluorescence techniques such as confocal microscopy achieve.

Laser Technology Helps to Develop Cleaner Engines

Dutch researcher Bas Bougie has developed a laser system to investigate soot development in diesel engines. Small soot particles are not retained by a soot filter but are, however, more harmful than larger soot particles. Therefore, soot development needs to be tackled at the source. Laser Induced Incandescence (LII) is a technique that reveals exactly where soot is generated and can be used by project partners to develop cleaner diesel engines.

Foundation Commits Support for Development and Construction of Thirty-Meter Telescope

The California Institute of Technology and the University of California have received a $200 million commitment over nine years from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation toward the further development and construction of the Thirty-Meter Telescope (TMT). Funding under this commitment will be shared equally between the two universities, with matching gifts from the two institutions expected to bring the total to $300 million. When built, TMT will be the largest telescope in the world.
