Astronomers Study Extrasolar Planets Using Advanced Camera System

A team of astronomers have used the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope to detect, for the first time, strong evidence of hazes in the atmosphere of a planet orbiting a distant star. The discovery comes after extensive observations made recently with Hubble’s Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS).

Cambridge Research & Instrumentation, Inc. (CRi) announces the launch of Nuance 2, the affordable, breakthrough system that converts any brightfield or fluorescent microscope into a multispectral imaging workstation. For multispectral imaging analysis of a larger specimens, such as embryos, zebrafish, plants, tissue culture and microtiter plates, the Nuance 2 can be mounted onto a fluorescent macroscope. The Nuance 2 system will be showcased at the upcoming San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium from December 13th through December 16th in San Antonio, Texas.

Astronomers Releases Largest Digital Survey of the Milky Way

A collaboration of over 50 astronomers, The IPHAS consortium, led from the UK, with partners in Europe, USA, Australia, has released today the first comprehensive optical digital survey of our own Milky Way. Conducted by looking at light emitted by hydrogen ions, using the Isaac Newton Telescope on La Palma, the survey contains stunning red images of nebulae and stars. The data is described in a paper submitted to the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.

OSRAM’s LED Research Team Wins German Future Prize 2007

For outstanding research work on innovative lighting technologies Dr. Klaus Streubel and Dr. Stefan Illek from OSRAM Opto Semiconductors, together with Dr. Andreas Bräuer from the Fraunhofer Institute for Optics and Precision Engineering in Jena, were awarded this year’s prize for technology and innovation from the President of Germany. The German Future Prize for 2007 was awarded specifically for thin-film chip technology and its application in the Ostar family of LEDs.

Carl Zeiss and physicists Dr. Eric Betzig and Dr. Harald Hess have signed an exclusive license agreement for commercialization of Photo- activated Localization (PAL) microscopy. This new technique opens a new world of fluorescence microscopy, demonstrating for the first time in cells a resolution of approximately 20 nm. This is an order of magnitude higher than conventional fluorescence techniques such as confocal microscopy achieve.
