User-Configurable System Simplifies Fiberoptic Rigging

Building on their best-selling line of video media converters, the Stratos VMDA-6 offers users a new level of flexibility for today's HD/SD production assignment by combining dual functionality of HD/SD fiber media conversion with a sophisticated distribution management toolset in one convenient package.

Unlike any product currently available, the VMDA-6 provides broadcast engineers and production crews with a flexible tool for setting up and managing fiber optic transmission lines in either a studio or live production environment. The unit case is ruggedized for use as a throw-down for live-event usage or fits in a standard 1RU rack.

The key feature of the VMDA-6 is the flexible user-selectable modality for media conversion and distribution of SMPTE 297m-compatible HD/SD traffic. Based on three efficient configurations, this device accommodates variety situations most common to production work:

  • Mode 1 allows for a fiber signal input re-clocked to Fiber Out and media converted to a distributed 6-channel electrical output;
  • Mode 2 allows an electrical input to be media converted to Fiber Out, while accepting a fiber input, media converted to a distributed 6-channel electrical output;
  • Mode 3 distributes an electrical input to a 6-channel electrical output while media converting the signal for fiber output. All signals are internally reclocked for added signal integrity.
