Daylight Solutions Awarded Phase 1 SBIR from DARPA for High Power Mid-Infrared Laser System

Daylight Solutions, Inc., a leading manufacturer of molecular detection and illumination solutions in the mid-infrared, announced today that the company has been awarded a Phase 1 Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) award from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). This award will be used to advance Daylight's compact, high power ECqcL technology for infrared countermeasures (IRCM).

The project will focus on scaling the output power of Daylight’s patented ECqcL technology to greater than 5 Watts, providing a much needed update to current IRCM methods. The techniques developed will be integrated into Daylight’s miniaturized packaging technology, allowing compatibility with high volume production processes.

“The aggressive evolution of Daylight’s miniaturized, high power ECqcL technology is well aligned with the demands of the Defense sector,” says Daylight’s CEO/CTO, Dr. Timothy Day. “This project assists us in advancing our technology by providing increased output power levels, while reducing system size, weight, and power consumption. It provides a clear path to next-generation IRCM solutions.”

Daylight’s technology also provides solutions to a host of advanced applications in both the commercial and defense markets, including breath analysis, fugitive gas leak detection, atmospheric pollution monitoring, active illumination, remote sensing, and LADAR.

Daylight Solutions develops molecular detection and illumination systems for use in industrial process controls, scientific research, medical diagnostics, environmental monitoring, homeland security and defense applications. The company develops sensors and offers a line of miniaturized, broadly tunable and fixed wavelength mid-infrared laser sources that can operate either pulsed or continuous wave. The company’s patented technology enables small, battery powered devices that are extremely sensitive to the presence of trace amounts of molecules in real-world environments.
