INRS Professor Elected OSA Fellow in Recognition of Contributions to Ultrafast Photonics

INRS professor José Azaña of the Énergie Matériaux Télécommunication Research Centre has been elected Fellow by the Optical Society (OSA) in recognition of his remarkable contributions to the advancement of ultrafast photonics, particularly in the areas of integrated waveguide technologies and compact fibre optics devices. He is the only Quebec academic and one of three Canadian researchers in this year's group of 77 OSA Fellows.

His election attests to his leadership in the field of optics and photonics, his record of outstanding publications, and the significance of his scientific and technological work. Professor Azaña holds the Canada Research Chair in Ultrafast Photonic Signal Processing and is known for his ground-breaking research aimed at applications in high-bandwidth communications, high-speed information processing, and computing.

Professor Azaña will be honoured at the Optical Fibre Communications Conference and Exposition, which runs from March 20 to 24, 2016, in Anaheim, California.

About the Optical Society The Optical Society (OSA) was founded in 1916 and is the world's leading scientific and professional association in the field of optics and photonics. Its more than 19,000 members from some hundred different countries include researchers, academics, engineers, students, and business leaders, all dedicated to advancing the science and technology of light.

About INRS INRS is a graduate-level research and training university and ranks first in Canada for research intensity (average grant funding per faculty member). INRS brings together some 150 professors and close to 700 students and postdoctoral fellows at its four centres in Montreal, Quebec City, Laval, and Varennes. Its applied and fundamental research is essential to the advancement of science in Quebec and internationally even as it plays a key role in the development of concrete solutions to the problems faced by our society.
