Acuity Brands (NYSE: AYI), a market leader in innovative energy-efficient lighting and control solutions, is supplying Holophane(R) Washington Postlite(R) LED luminaires to revitalize an upscale neighborhood in the City of Vancouver, BC, Canada. The Holophane brand has been a recognized leader in high-quality and lowest total cost of ownership lighting solutions for commercial, industrial, and outdoor applications for over 110 years.
Surrounded by the Coast Mountain Range and the Pacific Ocean, Vancouver has been hailed as one of the most livable cities in the world and boasts one of the smallest carbon footprints of any major city within North America. To further the image of the former Olympic Games host city, Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson, in February 2009, launched an initiative to become the world's greenest city by 2020.
For this outdoor lighting project supporting the mayor's initiative LED luminaires were the only types considered and objectives focused on lighting quality, sustainability and energy-efficiency. After a competitive selection process, the Holophane Washington Postlite Series was chosen, qualifying as the only units that met the full set of Vancouver's needs, including stringent and sustained performance criteria. The neighborhood being retrofit is sensitive to concerns about maintaining dark night skies and the Holophane full cutoff optics provide the strict light control required.
The City of Vancouver will install these LED luminaires along several thousand linear feet of roadway, with the project slated for completion this spring. The Holophane Washington Postlite Series combines a full-cutoff optic, and a vintage appearance, with the sustainability and reduced life-cycle costs associated with LED technology. The fixtures' precision optical system and high-output LEDs provide optimized light output to maximize pole spacing while maintaining uniform illumination. The Washington Postlite LED Series luminaires allow the city to space fixtures farther apart than would be possible with competitive units.
The city will mount the Holophane luminaires on custom 16-foot concrete poles, replacing the steel poles installed in 1946 that supported the existing cobra-head lighting system. The area has many large, heavy trees and city planners required that the new lighting fit beneath the tree canopy. The custom 16-foot poles being utilized accomplish this goal.
The luminaires' LED light output and system life are optimized through an advanced thermal management system, with a dedicated heat sink mounted into the fixture to pull heat away from the critical LED components. A unique housing design eases installation and maintenance, helping to reduce the units' lifetime costs.
