Hitachi Displays, Pixtronix Co-Develop PerfectLight MEMS Display Technology

Hitachi Displays and Pixtronix have collaboratively developed the PerfectLight MEMS display technology. The prototype displays, developed by Hitachi Displays, utilize the proprietary display technology of Pixtronix. Hitachi Displays will showcase the new displays at CEATEC Japan, in Makuhari Messe, Tokyo, Japan, from October 5 to 9, 2010.

The low-power PerfectLight display is suitable for portable multimedia applications. It offers 100 µs shutter response times, 170-degree viewing angles, 24-bit color depth, and 135% NTSC color gamut. The display also offers a power reduction of 75% over LCD displays. The PerfectLight display is developed based on the Digital Micro Shutter MEMS technology of Pixtronix. The MEMS technology is inbuilt in the LCD infrastructure, and it avoids the need for color filters, polarizers, and liquid crystals to provide a durable, programmable, and efficient display. The new display provides Application Agility for optimizing power consumption and image quality for applications, including e-reader operation, and full speed video, in a single system.

Pixtronix’s Chief Executive Officer, Tony Zona stated that they are delighted with the joint development of displays with Hitachi Displays. He added that the display devices meet the needs of various markets, such as advanced smart phones and tablets.
