NOAA GOES-R Set to Launch in 2014

NASA, in coordination with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites Program, has awarded an instrument contract to Lockheed Martin Corporation, Bethesda, Md. The contract is for one instrument, with three options for additional instruments. The total estimated value including options is $178 million.

Solar-Powered Laser Promises Almost-Unlimited Energy

A new kind of efficient, solar-powered laser has been developed by researchers at the Tokyo Institute of Technology, in Japan. They hope to use the laser to help them realize their goal of developing a magnesium combustion engine. The researchers described the new laser in a recent issue of Applied Physics Letters.
