Enceladus, a peculiarly small, geologically active moon of Saturn, emits an impressive plume of water vapor and ice from its southern pole, a bit like Yellowstone’s Old Faithful. The Cassini-Huygens spacecraft, circling Saturn since 2004, has the pictures to prove it.

Super-Lightweight Miniature Spectrometers Help Investigate Plant Parameters in New Zealand Grasslands

A pair of super-lightweight miniature spectrometers from Ocean Optics is helping researchers investigate plant parameters in a verdant patch of New Zealand grassland. The compact STS model spectrometers, one deployed as a ground unit and the other aboard an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), are making synchronized hyperspectral measurements of barley and sugar beet crops to assess plant characteristics for more effective crop management.

Launch of Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph Spacecraft Will Enable Better Observation of the Sun

Scientists will soon be able to observe the sun like never before, thanks to the successful launch of the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) spacecraft and science instrument, designed and built by Lockheed Martin for NASA. The IRIS spacecraft was launched at 7:27 pm PDT. IRIS ground stations received telemetry and verified the health of the spacecraft at 8:25 pm PDT.

A film director looking for a location where a movie about Mars could be shot might consider the Atacama Desert, one of the harshest landscapes the planet has to offer. Due to the accidents of its geography, Atacama is the driest place on Earth. Some scientists believe there was no rain to speak of in part of the Atacama between 1570 and 1971. With little moisture in the air its salt lakes, sand dunes and lava flows broil or freeze and are blasted by ultraviolet radiation.
