MRO HiRISE Returns Spectral Signatures of Hydrated Salts on Mars

A new study led by scientists at the Georgia Institute of Technology provides the strongest evidence yet that there is intermittent flowing liquid water on modern Mars. Using instruments on board NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO), researchers measured spectral signatures of hydrated minerals on slopes where mysterious, possibly water-related streaks are found on the red planet. These streaks, known as recurring slope lineae (RSL), form and snake down the planet’s steep slopes during warm seasons when temperatures exceed -10 degrees Fahrenheit (-23 degrees Celsius). They disappear at colder times during the Martian year.

ISO/IEC 17025 Accreditation Granted to Bruker’s NMR FoodScreener Laboratory

Bruker announced that its NMR FoodScreener™ laboratory for food authenticity and quality determination, located in Rheinstetten, Germany, has been granted ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation. The certificate has been awarded for Bruker’s validated methods for the determination of ingredients and measures of authenticity and quality of liquid foods and food extracts by NMR spectroscopy. Government and private analytical service laboratories offering NMR-based testing for food authenticity and quality with Bruker’s standard operating procedures (SOPs) and validated methods can now more easily get these NMR methods accredited in their lab.

Novel 2D HYSCORE Spectroscopy Method Helps Capture Photosynthesis Reactions

A new spectroscopy method is bringing researchers at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) closer to understanding – and artificially replicating – the solar water-splitting reaction at the heart of photosynthetic energy production. Understanding the step-by-step mechanism of photosynthesis could lead to methods of producing highly efficient solar energy. The new spectroscopy method, “2D HYSCORE,” is able to capture the reactions that split water and hydrogen peroxide in metal-containing proteins or metallo-enzymes in nature.
