LABSCO Appointed as Nikon Instruments' Clinical Distributor in Six States

Nikon Instruments Inc. announced that it has appointed Laboratory Supply Company, "LABSCO" its clinical laboratory dealer in Kentucky, Indiana, Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, Ohio and West Virginia. LABSCO, the largest privately held distributor of clinical lab products in the United States, will sell Nikon's market leading i-Series Laboratory Microscopes and DS Series Digital Cameras to the health care market in these states.

AXT Becomes Charter Member of the concentrator photovoltaics Consortium

AXT, Inc., a leading manufacturer of compound semiconductor substrates, today announced that it has become a charter member of the CPV Consortium, a global industry organization that supports the development and long-term success of the concentrator photovoltaics (CPV) industry, with the goal of providing a low-cost, reliable source of renewable energy. Concentrator photovoltaic (CPV) cells, referred to as "multi-junction" or "III-V" cells, offer significantly higher efficiencies than traditional photovoltaic systems. In addition to AXT, CPV Consortium charter members include 3M, Concentrix, Emcore, ISFOC, Isofoton, Solfocus and Veeco.

Breakthrough Silicon Technology Selected to Develop Next-Generation Optical Interconnects

Luxtera, the worldwide leader in Silicon CMOS Photonics, today announced it has signed a multi-million dollar contract with Sun Microsystems for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency's (DARPA) Ultraperformance Nanophotonic Intrachip Communications (UNIC) program. Luxtera's technology and silicon fabrication processes will be used to develop next-generation optical interconnects to produce chip-to-chip and intra-chip interconnect technology. Optical Microcavity Resonance Technique for Detecting Unlabelled Target Molecules

Even very small numbers of deadly infectious agents or allergenic pollen molecules can cause big problems for humans. But detecting such trace amounts is difficult to do fast enough to do any good. Current techniques -- for example, air sampling on filters or slides until enough molecules for a detectible signal or preparing specially tagged molecules for lab experiments -- are more suitable for general research than alerting people to an imminent threat.

LEDs May Help Reduce Skin Wrinkles

Researchers in Germany are describing a potential alternative to Botox and cosmetic surgery for easing facial wrinkles. Their study, scheduled for the November 5 issue of ACS' Crystal Growth + Design, a bi-monthly journal, reports that high intensity visible light from light emitting diodes (LEDs) applied daily for several weeks resulted in "rejuvenated skin, reduced wrinkle levels, juvenile complexion and lasting resilience."
