New Sapphire 488 nm Laser from Coherent Ideal for Fluorescence-Based Applications

A new Sapphire™ LP laser from Coherent, Inc. (Santa Clara, CA) (Nasdaq: COHR) extends this family of compact, CW, visible lasers to higher powers by offering 200 mW of output at the popular 488 nm wavelength.

New Sapphire 488 LP 200 lasers

For OEMs and end users alike, the new Sapphire 488 LP 200 simplifies and lowers the cost of integrating this power level, which was previously only available from lasers with a larger footprint and thermal/power budget.  Plus, this new laser provides identical form, fit and function as Sapphire LP lasers at other wavelengths and power levels, making it simple to upgrade existing instruments by adding a new power level or additional wavelength.

Based on the company’s unique optically pumped semiconductor laser (OPSL) technology, Sapphire LP lasers have already proved to be the optimum choice for bioinstrumentation applications because of their ideal combination of compact packaging (34 mm x 70 mm x 125 mm), ultra-low (<0.25% rms) output noise, excellent beam quality (M2 < 1.1), flexible control interface (RS232, analog, USB), and wide selection of output powers and wavelengths.

The new Sapphire 488 LP 200 laser is intended for fluorescence-based applications that need this higher power level to provide the requisite speed and/or signal to noise ratio.  Examples include flow cytometers using dual flow cells, high speed confocal microscopy techniques, and super-resolution microscopy, i.e. stochastic imaging.
