Tellabs Optical LAN Products Receive JITC Certification

The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) plans to deploy optical LANs (local area networks) and packet optical networks worldwide to modernize military bases, deliver real-time battlefield imagery and secure mission-critical defense communications.  The DoD recently approved a number of Tellabs optical networking and enterprise GPON (gigabit passive optical networking) products.

"No one puts mission-critical telecom equipment through tougher tests than the U.S. Department of Defense.  Tellabs' products are the first and only optical LAN and packet optical transport with 40G to pass DoD's stringent testing and achieve JITC certification," said Joe Shilgalis, vice president for Tellabs Government Systems.  "Now we can help DoD succeed in its mission by increasing communications bandwidth, reliability and security, while cutting costs and energy use."

Tellabs optical LAN products deliver high availability, capacity, scalability and security

JITC certified the Tellabs® 1000 Multiservice Access Platform, Tellabs® 1134 and 1150 Multiservice Access Platforms, and Tellabs® 1600 Optical Network Terminals. These products deliver the highest availability, capacity, scalability and security for crucial voice, video and data services.

Enabling network convergence over a fiber infrastructure, Tellabs optical LAN products deliver up to 2.4 Gbps per user with native end-to-end IP/Ethernet technology.  Compared with a conventional active Ethernet LAN, Tellabs optical LAN products:

  • Provide higher bandwidth, cut capital expense up to 70%, reduce power needs up to 80% and shrink space needs up to 90%,
  • Enable network unification by consolidating traditional copper-based local area networks, copper-based phone and coaxial-based video services onto a single fiber,
  • Offer end-to-end management systems,
  • Increase bandwidth performance per subscriber,
  • Increase reliability and security with an enhanced information-security capability developed for the Federal government,
  • Reduce cost of deployment and ownership with PON (passive optical network) architecture with a simplified, phased migration path to VoIP (voice over Internet Protocol) from traditional voice.

The Tellabs® 1100 Multiservice Access Platform provides the power and versatility to support new services while leveraging existing infrastructure. The Tellabs® 1600 Optical Network Terminal delivers voice, video and high-speed data over a single optical fiber via gigabit passive optical network (GPON) technology.

Packet optical transport products deliver innovative technology integration to reduce network costs

JITC certified the Tellabs® 7100 Optical Transport System and the Tellabs® 7100 Nano Optical Transport System. These products integrate SONET (synchronous optical network)/SDH (synchronous digital hierarchy), native Ethernet switching and ROADM-based (reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexer) DWDM (dense wavelength-division multiplexing) technology to enable the federal government to deploy the most agile, multi-service transport network and reduce the total cost of ownership.

As the first JITC-certified packet optical transport system, the Tellabs® 7100 system extends the optical LAN from the enterprise GPON network towards the data core by providing efficient Layer 2 aggregation, while offering virtually unlimited bandwidth with WDM technology. SONET traffic can be converged onto the same Tellabs® 7100 system using a separate wavelength, instead of a completely separate network. The Tellabs® 7100 Nano system, a right fit for the majority of DoD agencies' locations with limited space and high bandwidth requirements, offers similar capabilities in a more compact footprint with lower power consumption. These products:

  • Decrease capital expenses by up to 60% and power consumption by up to 65% by reducing network elements through technology integration,
  • Extend the network lifecycle by providing virtually unlimited bandwidth with JITC-certified 40G technology today and support for future 100G services,
  • Offer secure, ultra-reliable communications to support any mission, having been measured to deliver 99.9999% (six nines) availability in telecom service provider networks.
