SCHOTT LLS LED Light Source Lasts Longer, Costs Less

The SCHOTT® LLS, a small footprint LED based light source for fiber optic based illumination, was launched today at the International Robots & Vision Show.

Designed for machine vision, the LLS offers a long lifetime of 50,000 hours, and therefore requires less scheduled maintenance than non-LED fiber optic light sources. The LLS is available in a variety of wavelength bands including red, white, amber, green, blue and UV.

The LLS features an external triggered strobe mode with a maximum 1KHz pulse rate, maximum pulse width of 1m/sec, and a duty of 1/10. The unit also possesses a non-volatile memory for storing operating parameters, which allows it to automatically restore operating conditions on power up.

The LLS is optimized with all of SCHOTT's COLDVision fiber optic lightguides, and adaptors for other lightguides are also available. In addition, the LLS' Multiport Terminal Block Connector enables the unit to be easily integrated into machine vision applications.

Longer Life, Lower Energy Consumption
The SCHOTT LLS offers several advantages over other types of fiber optic light sources used in machine vision applications, including:

  • Long life-time (50,000 hours)
  • Low power consumption
  • Immunity to vibration and shock
  • Instantaneous switching
  • Fast strobing capabilities
  • Small dimensions

“Specifically designed to replace some halogen light sources that use fiber optic heads, the introduction of the LLS further strengthens SCHOTT's range of product offerings in the machine vision market,” said Domenic Bucci, Business Manager, Industrial Products, SCHOTT. “The LLS provides an excellent alternative to halogen light sources for customers who desire lower overall cost light sources and have the added benefit of not having to replace all the fiber optic heads the customer already owns. The LLS is RoHS and WEEE compliant”

The LLS offers users 4 different types of control interfaces -- a continuous intensity control knob, USB 2.0, RS-232 or analog 0-5 Volt. The auto-sensing inputs eliminate the needs to switch manually between the modes. The unit also features a user control lock-out via the USB and RS-232 controls.

The unit is overtemperature and fan failure protected, and comes with USB drivers, demo software and programming examples. The LLS is 129 mm wide, 197 mm long, 63 mm high, weighs 1.9 lbs, and operates at a temperature range between -4° Fahrenheit (-20° Celsius) to 104° F (40° C).
