SolarMax LED Lands Multi-Million Dollar Contract with California Department of Transportation

SolarMax LED, through its wholly owned subsidiary ActOne Communications, Inc., has landed a multi-million dollar California Department of Transportation contract to replace more than 29,000 aging street lights with the Southern California company’s leading-edge, high-efficiency LED luminaires. Initial work will focus on public roadways and arterials across Sacramento County.

Terms of the $4 million-plus contract are being finalized. SolarMax LED and Caltrans officials are planning to begin the conversion process this summer.

The progressive nature of the project attracted some of the biggest companies in the LED industry, including GE Lighting and Philips. Many of the nine pre-qualified bidders viewed it as a prime opportunity to showcase their latest energy saving solutions. In the end, Caltrans selected the SolarMax LED subsidiary, one of the early-stage innovators in LED technology and applications.

ActOne, which specialized in signage and outdoor lighting systems for government and commercial markets, grew to become one of the leading providers in North and Latin America before its acquisition by SolarMax Technology, Inc. in 2013. Its high-efficiency, commercial-grade lighting systems can be found in multiple communities throughout California and the western United States.

“The caliber of companies competing for this opportunity speaks volumes about its significance to advancing energy conservation,” said SolarMax Technology Executive Vice-President Ching Liu. “Caltrans specs represent the gold standard in terms of lighting for public roadways. We are both grateful and humble to have been chosen to partner with the agency in their ongoing efforts to create a more energy efficient California.”
