Dow Corning Lighting Industry Experts to Speak at LED Professional Symposium

Dow Corning, a global leader in silicones, silicon-based technology and innovation, announced today that two of its lighting industry experts will speak at the LED Professional Symposium (LpS 2015), from September 22 to 24 in Bregenz, Austria. The company will also spotlight at its booth (#D2) two advanced new silicone technologies for LED lighting, the expanded design and manufacturing flexibilities offered by its Dow Corning® Moldable Silicones product family.

"The global general lighting market is poised for transformation as LEDs compete more aggressively with conventional light sources," said Hugo Da Silva, Global Industry Director, LED Lighting, Dow Corning. "Optical-grade silicones are a driving force in that transformation, as they are uniquely able to introduce more efficient, reliable and cost-effective lighting concepts. As a long-time collaborative innovator with industry leaders, Dow Corning is helping to push the limits of LED lighting, and introduce a new generation of solid-state lighting."

François De Buyl, senior lighting application engineer for Dow Corning’s Lighting Solutions business will present a paper titled, "Why Moldable Silicone is Driving Innovation in Engineering of LED Optics for Professional Lighting," on Wednesday, Sept. 23 at 1:30 p.m. during the conference’s Thermal Management & Optics session. His presentation will detail the unique benefits these materials offer LED lighting applications, and the breakthrough new designs they are helping to introduce in the general illumination market.

Da Silva will also discuss the challenges and opportunities of exterior front lighting and interior lighting at LpS 2015 as part of an Automotive Lighting Workshop. Specifically, he will discuss the unique potential of silicones in automotive lighting applications. Sponsored by the European Photonics Industry Consortium (EPIC), this workshop is scheduled to be held from 9:00 to 12:30 a.m. on Sept. 24.

At its booth, Dow Corning will showcase a very broad portfolio of silicone solutions for optimizing the manufacture, performance and reliability of LED lighting modules and fixtures. Among them, two new technologies will stand out:

  • Dow Corning® CI-2001 White Reflecting Coating is a bright white reflective coating designed to enhance the optical output and efficiency of LED lighting fixtures and to offer good resistance to environmental aging.
  • Dow Corning® EI-1184 Optical Encapsulant delivers high transparency and weatherability to enable reliable, long-lasting protection of sensitive LED electronics against moisture, ultraviolet light, thermal cycling and extreme temperatures. It targets demanding outdoor LED lighting applications.

Dow Corning will also spotlight the expanded design flexibilities, enhanced reliability and simpler processability enabled by its ground-breaking Moldable Silicones technology. These versatile materials are helping to redefine LED lamp and luminaire designs by enabling more complex shapes, micro-scale optical structures, multifunctional parts and even undercuts difficult to achieve with organic polymers or glass. Available as optically clear or highly white reflective solutions, they resist against yellowing and physical degradation from high lumen density and temperatures up to 150°C+ to ensure reliable performance over the lifetime of the device.

Further, Dow Corning will display at its booth its industry-leading portfolio of advanced silicone solutions for assembly and protection of LED lamps and luminaires. Encompassing a broad range of high-performance adhesives, sealants, encapsulants, coatings and thermal interface materials, the portfolio offers versatile options for pushing LED luminaires design boundaries, improving product reliability, expanding manufacturing freedoms and lowering the total cost of ownership.

LpS 2015 is Europe’s foremost LED and OLED lighting technology event for people who are involved in the design and engineering for future LED lighting systems in the fields of general, industrial and architectural lighting. The event is held from Sept. 22 to 24 at the Festspielhaus Bregenz in Bregenz, Austria.
