New High Power Tunable Laser Generates All Commonly Used Wavelengths

NeoPhotonics, a leading supplier of photonic integrated circuit (PIC) based components, modules and subsystems for the telecom and CATV industries, will debut at OFC a new high power tunable laser for DWDM (dense wavelength division multiplexing) networks that has an output power of 40 mW and other features ideal for DQPSK coding and 40 Gbps systems. NeoPhotonics will display this and other products in Booth 2339.

At 40 mW optical output power, the NeoPhotonics® widely tunable NTL2040 laser can transmit at twice the output power of a standard ITLA. Special coding used in some 40 Gbps transmission requires higher optical power to overcome higher loss from additional optical components. In addition, 40 Gbps systems are much more sensitive to dispersion than 10 Gbps systems and require narrower linewidths and higher Side Mode Suppression Ratios (SMSR).

The external cavity design and output power of the NeoPhotonics NTL 2040 laser results in a narrow linewidth, low noise, high SMSR and high 40 mW power. The NTL2040 laser also enjoys all of the advanced features of NeoPhotonics NTL2000 series tunable lasers and can address all commonly used wavelengths in DWDM systems in the C, C+, L and XL bands, with channel spacing based on the “ITU-T” specified 50 GHz grid. Thus, one NTL2000 series tunable laser can replace any of 120 single wavelength lasers in the C+ or XL bands. As a result, the NTL2040 laser enables 40 Gbps transmission while also reducing the complexity and cost of systems design and lowering the cost of sparing and inventory.

The NeoPhotonics NTL2000 series uses a continuous wave (CW) external cavity laser delivering high spectral purity with low RIN, low SMSR and narrow linewidth. The output power is adjustable with standard outputs of 10mW, 20mW and 40 mW. It is suitable for most DWDM applications, including metro, long-haul and ultra long-haul, and data rates from 2.5G to 40G. The laser has fast wavelength tuning to meet the standards for SONET/SDH and DWDM protection switching, dynamically reconfigurable networks and remote provisioning and testing.

The simple, proprietary design with no moving parts, standard off-the-shelf components and efficient, low cost manufacturing provides for performance, reliability and cost advantages. The laser module integrates a butterfly package with all of the requisite drive and control electronics into an OIF MSA compliant ITLA module
