PennWell Officially Launches its Latest Venture

Looking to capitalize on the rapidly growing market for optical technologies and instrumentation in the life sciences, PennWell Corporation has officially launched its latest venture, BioOptics World. The new magazine and web site are now live and available at www.bioopticsworld.com.

Comprising a bi-monthly magazine, monthly e-Newsletter, and web site (with daily news, products, application notes, web casts, and more), BioOptics World focuses on the design, development, and utilization of optical technologies for the study, diagnosis, and treatment of disease and disease processes. It is intended for biomedical researchers and engineers involved in the development and fabrication of optical components and systems used in the life sciences, as well as for scientists and clinicians who utilize these technologies, including biologists, physicists, physicians, pathologists, forensic scientists, pharmaceutical companies, and government agencies.

"The goal of BioOptics World is to provide engineers, biologists, researchers, and clinicians with a magazine and web site that will facilitate the sharing of ideas among these disciplines," said Christine Shaw, Group Publisher & Sr. Vice President. "BioOptics World is designed to appeal to anyone interested in understanding how light interacts with the human body at the cellular, molecular, and tissue levels, and what the implications of this might be in the diagnosis and treatment of disease."

The Premier issue of BioOptics World features:

  • An overview of advances in DNA sequencers as manufacturers race toward the $1000 genome.
  • A review/forecast of the medical-laser market.
  • An interview with OCT pioneer James Fujimoto.

Upcoming issues of BioOptics World magazine will cover molecular imaging, spectroscopy, micros copy, cytometry, optical trapping, biosensing, microfluidics, cell biology, genomics, proteomics, and tissue engineering. Each issue also showcases application, market, and technology developments for therapeutic applications of lasers and optics in ophthalmology, dermatology, cardiology, urology, dentistry, and neurology. The magazine also tracks the latest developments at key government agencies related to funding and technology initiatives in the life sciences.

The first BioOptics World Webcast, to be broadcast Feb. 18, 2008, will focus on trends in optical technologies for cancer diagnostics. The presenter is Rebecca Richards-Kortum, Stanley C. Moore Professor and chair of the bioengineering department at Rice University and a well-respected re searcher in the field of biomedical engineering and biomedical optics. Future web casts will focus on microscopy, OCT, DNA sequencing, forensics/pathology, and neuro- imaging.
