Thunderline-Z Announces Laser Sealing Services for High-Frequency Components

Provider of high-resolution packages for microwave/RF industry, Thunderline-Z has introduced new laser services to seal high-frequency subassembly packages, components and devices.

The company employs sophisticated pulse-shaping and power ramping techniques to offer hermetic seals for custom and standard packages.

Sealing Components

Thunderline was able to offer the laser welding services by investing in Miyachi Unitek’s two industrial-grade lasers. Thunderline-Z procured two latest Nd:YAG laser systems called the LW150A and the LW500A. The latter laser device features a peak power of 7.5 kW and an average power of 500 W and is ideal for sealing lids to packages in a controlled glove box environment. The LW150A has a maximum peak power of 7 kW and an average power of 150 W and is suitable for attaching components within packages.

Laser welders accurately manage the optical power, which is applied to a lid and a package to form a repeatable, consistent seal. They utilize a combination of pulse shaping features and laser power to attain secure welds between package and lid housings.

A laser-welded package sustains hermeticity in demanding atmospheres such as Class S applications. Hermetic sealing is generally carried out in helium/nitrogen environments.
