JK Lasers announced that its fiber laser series can weld together copper and aluminum in lithium ion batteries used for electric vehicles, as proven from the tests. The fiber lasers are suitable for manufacturing lithium ion batteries.
Lithium Ion Battery
JK Lasers conducted trials with the single mode JK fiber laser, and showed that the high brightness and beam quality of the laser can obtain defect free and consistent joints at high speeds. These features are essential for the battery makers. The small spot size of the laser generated narrow welds that reduced brittle intermetallics formation.
Lithium ion batteries are used to power the eco-friendly electric cars. These batteries are lighter and smaller when compared to conventional vehicle batteries. The batteries are manufactured using a range of materials that create difficulties during welding. The minimal power consumption and compact footprint of the laser enable a cost-effective manufacturing process.
