Sorrento Networks Unveils Tunable XFP for GigaMux 3200 Optical Transport Platform

Metro optical access solutions provider, Sorrento Networks has introduced the new Tunable XFP feature in the GigaMux 3200 platform for all of the company’s 10G services. The XFP is a 10G laser signal present on WDM (Wavelength Division Multiplexing) platforms.

A conventional XFP includes a discrete channel allocated during the production. If a WDM network contains only a single specific channel, the network operator was required to buy the discrete XFP for the channel. However, with the company’s management system, the network operator can choose the necessary channels in real time and make those changes instantly. The new feature will reduce the installation time significantly and also lessen the network downtime for modifying the channels.

Handling a WDM network is functionally difficult with discrete XFPs. The network operator has to know the used channels and administer around the channels to make it fit for new growth. For this, the operator has to buy the exact channel required and install the correct XFP. Moreover, network maintenance with discrete XFPs demands operators to keep the exact XFP channels for replacing properly. But now, just one Tunable XFP is enough to support discrete XFPs that are worth for 40 channels.

The Chief Executive Officer of Sorrento Networks, Jim Nevelle stated that the Tunable XFP is very useful when network operators increase their capacity and add new customers.
