New, MEMS-Based Variable Optical Attenuator from Santec

Producer of advanced optical components, Santec, has introduced a new variable optical attenuator that has an attenuation range of up to 40 dB.

Santec Variable optical attenuator

The optical attenuator is used in a number of applications such as power equalization and control in multi-channel systems and gain control in EDFA (erbium-doped fibre amplifier). The variable attenuator has low wavelength dependence and has been developed for applications involving simultaneous attenuation of multiple wavelengths in a DWDM transmission system.

Santec attenuator is a modified design of the micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS)-based variable optical attenuator, the MOVA-1. Using an analogue voltage, the attenuator can be adjusted electronically.

The optical attenuator is compact and economically-priced and has less than 10 ms response time with low PDL (polarization dependence) and insertion loss. The variable attenuator is RoHS compliant and GR-63 and TelcordiaGR-1221 qualified.
