The Boeing Company has successfully completed a series of Space Based Space Surveillance (SBSS) system tests as part of the development of a new operational sensor for the U.S. Space Surveillance Network.
IPG Photonics Corporation, the leading global manufacturer of high-power lasers and amplifiers for diverse applications in numerous markets, today announced that its application center in Germany achieved a record high-quality deep penetration welding on thick stainless steel plates at rapid speeds. By using IPG’s unique 20 kW continuous wave (CW) 1070 nm commercial fiber laser, it is now possible to weld 1” 304 stainless steel at a speed of 0.85 meters/minute, and 3/4” samples at a speed of 2 meters/minute using a 200 micron fiber cable with a 420 micron focus spot size.
JDSU today introduced the Optical Dispersion Measurement (ODM) module for the T-BERD/MTS-6000 and T-BERD/MTS-8000. Offering chromatic dispersion (CD), polarization mode dispersion (PMD) and Attenuation Profile test functions in a single plug-in module, the ODM is the industry's most compact and integrated dispersion solution dedicated to field testing fiber optic networks. The module includes a patented solution for CD measurement.
Photonic crystal fibre’s ability to create broad spectra of light, which will be the basis for important developments in technology, has been explained for the first time in an article in the leading science journal Nature-Photonics.
A team of astronomers have used the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope to detect, for the first time, strong evidence of hazes in the atmosphere of a planet orbiting a distant star. The discovery comes after extensive observations made recently with Hubble’s Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS).
Cambridge Research & Instrumentation, Inc. (CRi) announces the launch of Nuance 2, the affordable, breakthrough system that converts any brightfield or fluorescent microscope into a multispectral imaging workstation. For multispectral imaging analysis of a larger specimens, such as embryos, zebrafish, plants, tissue culture and microtiter plates, the Nuance 2 can be mounted onto a fluorescent macroscope. The Nuance 2 system will be showcased at the upcoming San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium from December 13th through December 16th in San Antonio, Texas.
A collaboration of over 50 astronomers, The IPHAS consortium, led from the UK, with partners in Europe, USA, Australia, has released today the first comprehensive optical digital survey of our own Milky Way. Conducted by looking at light emitted by hydrogen ions, using the Isaac Newton Telescope on La Palma, the survey contains stunning red images of nebulae and stars. The data is described in a paper submitted to the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.
Nu Horizons Electronics Corp., a leading distributor of advanced technology semiconductor, display, illumination, power and system solutions, today announced the expansion of their Nu Solutions Network to include a number of industry leading suppliers focused on providing LED lighting solutions. Individually, each company offers leading-edge products, services and outstanding customer support.
ChemImage, a leader in Chemical Imaging technology, recently received an SBIR Phase I grant for studying Silicon Carbide (SiC) based materials for space-based optics.
