Researchers working at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) have developed a “piezo-optomechanical circuit” that converts signals among optical, acoustic and radio waves. A system based on this design could move and store information in next-generation computers.

New Robust Technique Enables 3D Imaging of Live Cells Without Staining

Professor YongKeun Park of the Physics Department at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) and his research team have developed a powerful method for 3D imaging of live cells without staining. The researchers announced the launch of their new microscopic tool, the holotomography (HT)-1, to the global marketplace through a Korean start-up that Professor Park co-founded, TomoCube.

Researchers report different approach to image separation

In recent years, computer scientists have been investigating a range of techniques for removing reflections from digital photographs shot through glass. Some have tried to use variability in focal distance or the polarization of light; others, like those at MIT, have exploited the fact that a pane of glass produces not one but two reflections, slightly offset from each other.

Electric pacemakers are used by people worldwide to help control abnormal heartbeats. The devices have helped scientists learn more about the heart’s physiology and disorders, says Chao Zhou, but they have their limits. Pacemakers must be surgically implanted. They can cause unwanted contractions in other areas of the chest, alter pH levels and cause tissue damage.

This year’s OFC Conference and Exposition, held March 20-24 at the Anaheim Convention Center, featured 580 exhibiting companies, more than 1,160 peer- reviewed papers and exceeded 13,000 attendees, an increase from 2015. Mirroring a dynamic and growing industry, OFC continued its multi-year growth pattern with 10 percent growth in net square footage sold.

Whether taking photos recreationally or professionally, photographers understandably want their snapshots to appear sharp and clear. Image clarity is dependent on exposure time, or the amount of time that a camera's sensor is exposed to light while a photograph is being taken. During this period, the shutter opens and the camera counts the number of photons emitted by the subject.

ADVA Optical Networking today announced that it is leading the Silicon Photonics Enabling Exascale Data Networks (SPEED) project. The project creates a platform for development, manufacturing and packaging of application-specific electro-photonic integrated circuits (ePICs) in silicon. ePICs combine electronic and optical functions on a single semiconductor chip, delivering better performance, smaller footprint and lower cost than competing solutions.
