Designs Provide Manufacturers with Blueprint for Sustainable Lighting Solutions

Avnet Electronics Marketing China, part of the global technology distributor, Avnet, Inc. (NYSE:AVT) , turned the spotlight on energy efficient, high brightness (HB) LEDs at the "Symposium on Sustainability Driven Innovative Technologies" implemented by the Hong Kong Productivity Council.

Avnet Electronics Marketing China's regional president Frederick Fu provided the audience with insight and guidance on designs to break down the barriers to entering the HB LED market and offered manufacturers a series of ready-to-go green solutions for sustainable, energy efficient lighting products. It covered thermal solution, and turn-key solutions for architecture, general, street and portable lighting.

"China is undergoing rapid industrialization and faces the dilemma of wanting to promote growth while conserving resources and protecting the environment. China is also a major carbon emitter, accounting for approximately 19% of global CO2 emissions, according to a World Energy Council report, 2008. So, it is clear why getting the environmental equation right when it comes to HB LEDs is so important," said Fu.

Fu notes that China is serious about embracing green lighting. In November 2008 the Government approved a spending list which includes a 210 billion yuan investment in environmental protection and energy conservation. It will also speed up the construction of 10 key energy conservation projects and green lighting is one of them.

Avnet is taking three green initiatives to create added values in design and supply chain which include:

-- Promoting energy saving technology -- Offering brands that provide energy saving products and help customers engage with new green brands. -- Providing total solution -- Leveraging a broad array of product franchise, Avnet integrates different green components into total solutions to customers. Benefits include faster time-to-market, reduced energy costs for end-users and a lighter overall environmental impact. -- Offering production ready green solutions -- Avnet Design Services' LED experts provide reference design and turn-key solutions for electronics, controls, thermal, optical and illumination levels.

"LED lighting is totally different from traditional electronic industry products. LED lighting products -- especially high brightness LEDs -- cover electronics, thermal and optical technologies. This broad expertise requirement can be a barrier to entry. That's where our design unit, Avnet Design Services come in, offering manufacturers total turn key solutions that lower the barrier and speed time to market," said Fu.

"Energy efficiency is a goal that consumers are looking for, businesses are embracing and governments are actively promoting. The combination of demand and market potential is making high brightness LEDs one of the fastest growing sectors in lighting in the next few years. Our goal is to help customers here in China and end users around the world to enjoy the benefits of energy efficiency as well as illumination," said Fu.

The participation at symposium is one of the first fruits of a Memorandum Of Understanding between the HKPC and Avnet Electronics Marketing China to stimulate the design and development of a new generation of energy efficient LED lighting products in a variety of application segments.
