New Quantum Mass Fusion Splicer with Automatic and Real-Time Clamp Force Adjustments

Sumitomo Electric Lightwave, a major leader in the design and manufacturing of optical fiber and connectivity solutions, today announced the introduction of the Quantum Type-Q101-M12™ Dual-Heater Mass Fusion Splicer, the second splicer launched in its Quantum Splicer product line.

The design of the Quantum Mass splicer is based on the market demand for a multi-fiber splicer that provides improved MPO connector functionalities, speed, performance and efficiencies for high density, high transmission speed data center, enterprise, and communication networks.

To meet the needs for growing MPO network connectivity, the Quantum Mass fusion splicer (1-12 fibers) is the industry’s only splicer with automatic clamp force adjustment and real-time clamp force calibration to minimize fiber to fiber offset when ribbonnizing loose tube fibers or splicing on MPO connectors on round cord loose tube cables. The Quantum Mass also addresses the speed required for increased productivity and faster network restorations and network moves, adds, and changes. With a typical splice time of 14 seconds and 55 second heater cycle time, the Quantum Mass is the fastest multi-fiber fusion splicer resulting in a 12 fiber splice under seventy seconds.

Like the Quantum Type-Q101-CA Core Alignment fusion splicer, the Quantum Mass is the only multi-fiber splicer with a fully functional touch-screen interface, making splicer function navigation more intuitive, faster, and easier than traditional keypad interfaces. The Quantum Mass incorporates both the touch-screen and keypad interfaces to offer technicians a preferred choice. The new Quantum is also the industry’s only mass splicer with internet remote maintenance, an SD port for virtually unlimited data storage, and the capability of downloading and uploading work related splicing project data, training videos, audio, and software.

Without compromising full splicing functionality, performance, and ruggedness, the Quantum Mass splicer is the industry’s smallest (4.72W x 6.06D x 4.96H inches) and lightest (2.0 kg) multi-fiber fusion splicer that is easier to carry and work with in the many small, confined spaces characterizing the data center, enterprise network, FTTx and outside plant work environments. Despite its small footprint and light weight, the Quantum Mass boasts the industry’s largest 640 x 320 fiber view and longest electrode life, while complying with the most stringent shock, waterproof, and dust resistance requirements.

“By continuing to listen to the customer, we have launched the most advanced, reliable, and user-friendly mass fusion splicer in the industry,” comments Joshua Seawell, director of the Lightwave Network Products division at Sumitomo Electric Lightwave. “We are grateful to our customers for their valuable input, which is the foundation of our continued leadership in providing the best and most advanced fusion splicing technology.“

The Quantum Mass is the industry’s only multi-fiber fusion splicer with a dual independent heater system, increasing splicing efficiency by 70%. The new splicer is compatible with the Lynx2 CustomFit® Splice-On Connectors for customized, on-site cable builds and terminations. Orders and shipping for the unit begin January 2013.
