Stanford University Scientists Develop Vision-Efficient Photovoltaic Diodes

Blind individuals can have visual advantage through special glasses that intensify near-infrared signals to a device inserted within the retina. With further developments, this method can be used to successfully restore vision for the blind in future.

However, some implanted components are required for this system. Components like wires and coils can be used as excellent power source for the device and therefore serve to be of much importance then with other proposed retinal prostheses.

Arrays of photovoltaic diodes were designed by James Loudin and his colleagues at Stanford University in California. These specifically designed arrays are capable of stimulating inner retinal cells, when implanted into the retina. The diodes remain as part of the system. Video camera integrated to glasses will efficiently collect as well as feed image data to a small portable computer. This data will then be converted to near-infrared light pulses. With the help of glasses, the pulses will beam through the eye, reaching the implanted diodes. This light will provide visual information in addition to acting as power source to the diodes. This development can be applied for devising methods of vision restoration for the blind.
