UCLA, Hamamatsu Collaborate to Advance Nano-Optical Imaging Instruments

UCLA’s California NanoSystems Institute has announced that it has planned to collaborate with a major manufacturer of camera systems and photon detectors, Hamamatsu Photonics, to advance nano-imaging instruments. Both nanotechnology and nanoscience will be applied to projects associated with environment, energy, medicine and health.

Hamamatsu will offer advanced photon detectors and systems to California NanoSystems Institute. In addition, Hamamatsu will coordinate with CNSI researchers on novel equipment to develop nano-level optical imaging instruments. The company’s instruments will be utilized in CNSI’s Advanced Light Microscopy/Spectroscopy core lab and the Macro-Scale Imaging Laboratory. Both laboratories focus on advanced image-analysis and optical imaging methods for the nanoscale classification of biomaterials, cellular dynamics, and the study of macromolecules. CNSI’s labs are equipped with a wide range of instruments for nanoscale research.

Hamamatsu Photonics’ President and Chief Executive Officer, Akira Hiruma stated that the company is pleased to work with CNSI and UCLA researchers. The partnership will help advance photonic technologies and may lead up to new type of applications for the company’s instruments, Hiruma said.
