UAH Scientists Use Lidar to Measure Ozone Caused by Lightning

Scientists at The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) have used UAH’s Rocket-city Ozone (O3) Quality Evaluation in the Troposphere (RO3QET) Lidar to measure ozone that was chemically produced by summertime lightning over the United States, research that could be important to air quality prediction and assessment once it is developed further.

New Optogenetic Technology Activates Immune Response to Attack Tumor Cells in Mice

A new optogenetic technology developed at UMass Medical School, called optogenetic immunomodulation, is capable of turning on immune cells to attack melanoma tumors in mice. Using near-infrared light, UMMS researchers have shown they can selectively activate an immune response by controlling the flow of calcium ions into the cell. This breakthrough could lead to less invasive, and more controlled and selective, immunotherapies for cancer treatment.

Modular Imaging System Enables Creation of a Wide Range of Computational Cameras

Computer Science Professor Shree Nayar and Makoto Odamaki, a visiting scientist from Ricoh Corporation, have developed Cambits, a modular imaging system that enables the user to create a wide range of computational cameras. Cambits comprises a set of colorful plastic blocks of five different types—sensors, light sources, actuators, lenses, and optical attachments.

Researchers Use External Light to Control Protein Activity in Mammalian Cells

Light can be used to control the transport of proteins from the cell nucleus with the aid of a light-sensitive, genetically modified plant protein. Biologists from Heidelberg University and the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) working in the field of optogenetics have now developed such a tool. The researchers, under the direction of Dr. Barbara Di Ventura and Prof. Dr. Roland Eils, employed methods from synthetic biology and combined a light sensor from the oat plant with a transport signal.

EyeVision Inspection for A Flawless Label Print

To check on the flawlessness of label prints and at the same time guarantee a high color accuracy, a maker of color controller and inspection systems has contacted EVT. With the EyeVision image processing software the user can create inspection programs to detect print and color defects with only a few mouse clicks. And that at a printing speed of 250mm/s and an inspection and reading speed of 35 labels per second.
