The 70 K-W is a water-cooled, thermal-power laser sensor with a 130 mm aperture, developed for ultra-high-power applications. It has dimensions of 467 × 396 × 427 mm. It can detect powers ranging from 2 to 70 kW in CW mode and up to 100 kW with a 12-second exposure.
It is intended for a beam with a Gaussian or flat-top profile incident at the center of its deflecting cone. Applications include directed energy systems, high-power fiber laser research and testing, and cutting and drilling in industrial manufacturing.
- 2 to 70 kW CW and up to 100 kW from the short-exposure power measurement

Features
Ultra-High-Power Average Power Measurement from Short Exposure
The 70 K-W has unique capabilities that enable average power measurement of ultra-high-power lasers from brief exposures up to 100 kW. Calorimetric sensors have a typical reaction time of tens of seconds.
Some laser-based systems are often used in directed energy applications that can only produce the beam for a few seconds (due to power and other limits). In such instances, a standard power sensor will be employed as a beam dump, and a complex configuration will be required to measure average power indirectly.
The 70 K-W’s unique ability to obtain the average power from an energy measurement of a laser “pulse” with a duration of a few seconds streamlines the measurement setup and allows direct measurement of the laser power while dumping the surplus power.
This makes the process simpler, more cost-effective, and safer, particularly when dealing with ultra-high power.
Support Horizontal and Vertical Measurements
Beam orientations vary depending on the application and use cases. For testing and development, directed energy systems typically employ a horizontal beam. However, in industrial settings, vertical beams are frequently favored owing to process constraints and safety concerns.
The system is designed to measure both horizontally and vertically, providing the flexibility needed to meet changing operational and safety requirements.
Operational Safety
The system provides operational safety with a low back reflection of <0.5% and a built-in interlock output with customizable trigger conditions. Together, these traits are critical for assuring safety in high-powered situations.
Real-Time Laser Power Monitoring
In some circumstances, users may want to test the stability of their laser or use a laser power indication as input to one of their systems. These requirements can be met by employing the 70 K-W’s inbuilt photodiode output, which allows direct connection to third-party devices for laser stability monitoring or immediate control and feedback.
Easy Integration with Third-Party Systems
The 70 K-W is compatible with a larger system and requires integration. This can be accomplished via Ethernet, RS232 communication ports, or an analog output. The sensor is compatible with both tap and deionized water, making it suitable for various cooling systems.
