The Right Solution for Light-Guide Backlighting

The new CERAMOS(TM) Reflector LED from OSRAM Opto Semiconductors provides unprecedented high brightness and power in a very small package, the ideal solution for backlighting mid-size (5"-20") LCDs. Specifically designed for light guide-based backlighting of displays in high ambient light conditions, such as those found in today's TFT displays, automotive dashboards and aircraft cockpits, the slim profile of the CERAMOS(TM) Reflector LED is well suited for in-coupling into light guides as thin as 2 mm. This feature also makes the LED ideal for edge lighting for LCD TVs and monitors.

The CERAMOS™ Reflector LED is powered by OSRAM's patented ThinGaN® LED technology, which enables it to operate at a high level of optical efficiency – 70 lumens per watt at 80mA. CERAMOS™ delivers a long life of 50,000 hours, and its SMD ceramic package enables excellent performance at high operating temperatures (up to 150°C), and is compatible with standard surface mount processes.

The slim, compact package dimensions (2.3 x 3.2 x 0.8 mm) facilitate integration into small display designs, and the oval out-coupling window allows for use in thinner light guides. Mercury-free and RoHS-compliant, the new CERAMOS™ Reflector LED is the perfect solution for light guide backlighting.

“As more display manufacturers look for an eco-friendly alternative to CCFL backlighting, the CERAMOS™ Reflector LED offers excellent efficiencies in brightness, lifetime and power savings in a compact package ideally suited for back lighting applications," said Ellen Sizemore, director, LED/IR marketing, OSRAM Opto Semiconductors, Inc.

In addition to display backlighting, the CERAMOS™ Reflector LED can be used for camera flash and strobe lighting; reading lamps in aircraft, cars and buses; decorative and entertainment lighting; and signage or marker lights.
