Silvaco Japan Co., Ltd. ("Silvaco") has announced that Silvaco’s liquid crystal simulator, Clever LCD was adopted by Japan Display Inc. ("Japan Display") for the design and development of existing and next generation of liquid crystals displays.
Clever LCD is a physics-based 3-dimensional simulator which calculates the director profile of a liquid crystal and the corresponding capacitance as a function of the bias applied to the structure. LCD structures are increasing in size and become more complex. As a result a 3D process simulation tool is needed to capture the details of the structure. Clever LCD uses Victory Process, Silvaco’s 3-dimensional process simulator, to create the 3D structure that is used as an input to the Clever LCD field solver. Silvaco’s background in meshing and solvers enables good convergence and makes it possible to simulate very complex structures in a minimum amount of time. After an intensive evaluation, Japan Display decided to integrate Clever LCD into their design environment in order to build and design highly efficient LCD structures.
Makoto Watanabe, General Manager of the Technology Promotion Department of the Technology Division of Japan Display, stated, “In the pixel design work that Japan Display is pursuing in order to realize high image quality, a precise estimate of electrostatic capacitance is essential, so we need a highly precision capacitance simulator. Clever LCD makes it possible for us to accurately and quickly calculate the liquid crystal capacitance, which is a dominant part of the overall pixel, and other parasitic capacitance simultaneously. Therefore, we expect to realize even more precision in our designs compared to that attained by conventional methods.”
Silvaco’s General Manager Yoshiharu Furui stated, “We are very pleased that Japan Display, which is a world leader due to its innovative technology, has adopted Clever LCD. Clever LCD is a product based on Silvaco’s TCAD technology, which is an industry standard for flat panel display design, and high-precision RC extraction technology.
