Echelon, APANET Green System Collaborate for Smart Lighting Project for Bydgoszcz, Poland City Streetlights

Echelon Corporation, a leading independent control networking company for the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), and its European partner, Polish-based APANET Green System, a leading application design and sales company of power consumption reduction systems, were awarded a comprehensive smart lighting and energy reduction project for the city streetlights of Bydgoszcz, Poland.

The eco-friendly retrofit will outfit 7,200 streetlights spread across approximately 400 streets utilizing a sophisticated multivendor networked lighting control solution. The project will utilize the Apanet Smart Lighting Controllers, powered by Echelon communications, and the Lumewave by Echelon smart server solution to deliver unrealized value for lighting installation including enhancing safety, reducing maintenance and energy costs as well as improving asset utilization. ENERGA Oświetlenie Ltd., also based in Poland, is managing the system installation to be completed by the end of August 2015.

In addition to the city’s 40 percent energy cost savings goal, Bydgoszcz expects its street lighting project will reduce energy consumption and CO2 emissions, as well as meet the EU’s ISO/IEC 13201 road lighting performance standard.

“The Bydgoszcz lighting project is a significant city improvement installation for Eastern European,” said Andrzej Lis, CEO of APANET Green System, who is part of the multivendor team. “It will vividly demonstrate how LED lighting, in conjunction with the right lighting control technology, can create more efficient, safe and eco-friendly street lighting at the citywide level.”

The smart lighting solution continually survey traffic and weather conditions and responds to any changes immediately. Lighting failures can be pinpointed and even anticipated by the system; therefore maintenance efficiency and responsiveness can be significantly improved. The entire solution incorporates the open communication network standard LonTalk protocol, developed by Echelon, which allows LonWorks devices smooth interoperability among different manufacturer’s products.

“Cities all over the world are feeling the pressure to save energy, money and maintenance time, all the while improving citizen safety,” said Ron Sege, CEO and chairman, Echelon Corp. “As with other city projects utilizing Echelon solutions around the world, we expect the Bydgoszcz project will demonstrate that networked lighting controls and LED retrofits together can meet all these objectives quickly, easily and cost-effectively.”

Bydgoszcz, a city that mirrors the population of Atlanta, GA, selected Apanet Green System GLC142 ballast controller powered by Echelon’s powerline networking technology; StreetLight.Vision control system; and LED luminaries.
