Indian City, Tirupati, Joins the Cree LED City Program

LED lighting manufacturer, Cree announced that Tirupati Municipal Corporation, an Indian-based organization, has joined an international program called the Cree LED City. The program supports the use of high-efficient LED lighting fixtures. Tirupati, a key pilgrimage center in Andhra Pradesh, India has replaced more than 140 conventional streetlights with advanced LED lights to illuminate high-traffic roads.

More than 50,000 pilgrims visit Tirupati, which is also a major educational and economical hub. Tirupati Municipal Corporation chose the LED fixtures to cut down its infrastructure expenditures.

A Tirupati-based firm, Avni Energy Solutions deployed 72 W LED streetlights along the city’s main junctions.  The LED lights feature the proprietary Cree XLamp LEDs and offer significant energy-savings as much as 70% when compared to conventional sodium vapor lights. The LED lights will enable Tirupati Municipal Corporation to save 6,187 units of electricity per month.

The Commissioner of Municipal Corporation of Tirupati, Mohan Reddy, stated that adequate lighting is necessary in high traffic roads, and advanced LED lighting fixtures will aid in reducing energy consumption costs.
