Revolutionary EFB Technology Wins the Prestigious New Machinery Promotion Award

OKI Printing Solutions today announced that its revolutionary Epi Film Bonding (EFB) technology has been awarded the most prestigious New Machinery Promotion Award by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) in Japan.

EFB has been specifically designed to support OKI Printing Solutions’ unique LED printheads. EFB provides an enhancement to the existing LED technology and it reaffirms the company’s position as an innovator and pioneer for adopting LED technology for printers.

Benefits of EFB technology:

  • The technology means that smaller driver chips can be produced, making the resulting LED printhead half the cubic size of conventional LED printheads. This saves space within the machine, enabling OKI Printing Solutions to produce more compact High Definition Color printers.
  • Printheads containing EFB technology emit twice the amount of light of conventional LED printheads. This means that the power supply to the printer is reduced, minimizing energy consumption and cutting down on the CO2 emissions of the printer.
  • Because fewer raw materials are needed in the manufacturing process, EFB contributes to reducing the environmental impact of OKI Printing Solutions’ products.

Harushige Sugimoto, President and CEO of OKI Printing Solutions commented: “OKI Printing Solutions is proud to be the world’s first printer company to achieve mass-production using EFB technology. The development of EFB not only offers enhancement to our existing LED printers, but is also potentially suitable for a range of additional applications and therefore opens up new markets for OKI Printing Solutions. While we continue to strengthen our position as the business printing specialists, our enhanced LED technology allows us to seek additional business opportunities to shape our future direction.”

Each year, the Japan Society for the Promotion of Machine Industry presents its New Machinery Promotion Award to a company or an individual whose technology excels in creativity, innovation and economic efficiency. The most prestigious of its class is awarded by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI). The finished technology must improve overall product quality and performance.

OKI Printing Solutions’ breakthrough EFB is a complex nanotechnology that works by releasing and bonding thin films onto dissimilar materials using intermolecular force. The Society recognized that printers containing the technology offered users an enhanced performance thanks to the reduced need for wire bonding and the number of mounted driver chips.

The technology has improved LED printhead productivity and has significantly contributed to a more efficient LED printhead manufacturing process.
