Nanophotonics and Near-Field Optics Experts Meet in San Sebastián for NFO12

The "Near-field Optics, Nanophotonics and Related Techniques NFO12" International congress, organized by the Donostia International Physics Center (DIPC) and CIC nanoGUNE, gathers 400 scientists and researchers at the Palacio Kursaal in San Sebastián between today and the 7 September who will debate on the latest advances in the fields of near optics and nanophotonics.

The study of near field optics focuses on the comprehension of light-material interactions and longitudinal scales which are comparable or less than the length of light waves. In turn, photonics is the science of generating, controlling and detecting photons.

The NFO12 Congress, whose previous edition was held in Beijing, will bring together international knowledge in this material in San Sebastián, which is a great opportunity to boost development of the science in the Basque Country.

The starting point of much nanoscience research is based on the correct visualization and analysis of materials at a nanoscale. Over the last few years new techniques have been developed in near field optics and nanophotonics and this Congress will serve to transfer this knowledge to multiple production and academic sectors.

The professor and researcher of the Optic Institute of the ETH de Zurich Lukas Novotny will present "20 years of near field optics" at the opening ceremony of the event in which Pedro Miguel Etxenike, president of the DIPC, and José María Pitarke, general director of CIC nanoGUNE will also participate.

Approximately 100 oral presentations will be given during the congress on the latest advances in near field microscopy, its applications in biology, physics and science of materials, as well as the new developments in nanophotonic circuits and devices.
