Plextronics and Holst Centre Collaborate to Promote OLED Lighting

Plextronics is an international technology organization with expertise in printed electronics and is based in the U.S. Holst Centre is an open-innovation enterprise set up by imec (B) and TNO (NL), based in the Netherlands.

The two organizations have collaborated to research flexible organic light emitting diode (OLED) lighting and signage. Plextronics¡¦ skill in most of the operational materials required to develop OLEDs comes as a useful addition to the efficiency of Holst experts.

The Plextronicsƒ{Holst collaboration aims to upgrade the scale of the lab device performance to meet the requirements of bigger areas and signages. This mammoth attempt will provide many creative lighting solutions in the residential and working surroundings.

An OLED apparatus includes light-emitting ingredients between protective and conductive layers. To optimize the electrical current running through the layers, hole injection and hole transport layers are required between the anode and the light-emitting ingredients. To provide minimal-cost processing in flexible substrates, the ingredients chosen to deposit in these layers need to be adaptable to solution-based roll-to-roll processing.

Plextronics is an expert in developing and manufacturing solution-based hole injection and hole transport layers. It will provide Plexcore hole injection and hole transport inks to the Holst Centre. Holst Centre will employ the Plexcore inks in its shared research program on Flexible OLED Lighting and Signage to generate functional OLED model fittings, enabling a study of their attributes and evaluation of their performance as applicable in a production environment.
