CLEO: 2012 Concluded After Demonstrating Applications in Ultrafast Lasers

Following six-day long technical and business program promoting the R&D segments of lasers and electro-optics, the CLEO: 2012 was drawn to closure in San Jose. World-class engineers, researchers and business professionals delivered presentations based on optical sensing, ultrafast lasers, OCT, and nanophotonic devices.

The event began with a tribute symposium for late laser pioneer Anthony Siegman. Presentations highlighted Siegman’s founding contributions to quantum nonlinear optics, in addition to symposium on unstable laser cavities, and speckle. The conference included seven special symposia, with topics ranging from quantum engineering to space optical systems.

Over 1,800 technical presentations in three core disciplines represented the expansion of lasers in research and applications.

  • The CLEO: Applications & Technology track featured a presentation based on the development of a flexible and compact femtosecond laser scalpel –equipped endoscope that can specifically remove the disease-affected tissue.
  • The CLEO: Science & Innovations program included various researchers, who demonstrated a counterintuitive concept about the designing of solar cells analogous to LEDs, capable of both emission and absorption of light.
  • The CLEO: QELS Fundamental Science track focused on researches from Canadian and French researchers who formulated a new method of studying electron motion using isolated and rapid pulses of light.

Plenary session speakers extend with the University of Ottawa’s Bob Boyd, University of California Santa Barbara’s Steve DenBaars. Also, France’s Mathias Fink and IBM’s Yurii Vlasov delivered presentations.

At the CLEO: Expo, 300 participating companies were present. Also, a new “Technology Playground”, showcasing various company products was launched. The Technology Transfer Program featured emerging entrepreneurs and researchers, major national labs, businesses and universities with commercially available, innovative technologies.
